Generic Spreader Settings Guide

Setting your spreader for fertilizing lawns can be complicated. Because there are so many spreader types and brands without standardization, and many particle sizes and formulations, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.

Below is a general guide to choosing the best option for your unique spreader and fertilizer combination. Note: it may be important to consider the age and condition of your spreader. This can affect how product flows through it. If there is corrosion present in the spreader tines, consider thoroughly cleaning, calibrating, and/or replacing the spreader.

Calibrating

1.     Divide 100 by the square footage of coverage the fertilizer bag states

2.     Multiply the weight of the bag by this number

3.     The resulting answer is the amount of fertilizer needed to cover 100 sq ft

4.     Place this amount of product in the spreader

5.     Mark a 10ft x 10ft area within your desired coverage area

6.     Apply using the suggested setting

Example: If the fertilizer bag weighs 25 lbs. and covers 5,000 square feet

100 sq. ft.

________   X 25 lbs. = ½ lb.   (This shows ½ lb. of product is needed to cover 100 sq. ft.)

5,000 sq. ft.

Troubleshooting

1.     If the fertilizer runs out before completing the marked area, decrease the setting. Mark off another 10ft x 10ft area and repeat the test until the correct application rate is found.

2.     If there is fertilizer left over in the spreader, increase the setting. Mark off another 10ft x 10ft area and repeat until the correct application is achieved.
