Making matters worse, its stench can linger for days, no matter how many times you bathe your dog with regular shampoo.
However, there are several solutions that can help rid your pet of this unpleasant aroma. From natural solutions like tomato juice or vinegar to store-bought solutions such as hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, here are some tips to effectively remove skunk smell from your dog.
Set Up a Wash Station
Before attempting to clean up after a smelly mess, setting aside a space specifically for the task is essential. Choosing an area outside with easy access to water as well as disposable towel supplies is a great way to begin. It also helps contain any odors and potential spread of bacteria that might come along with the job. The important part is making sure your pooch is comfortable in the designated deskunking spot in order to make the process run smoothly. Providing distractions such as toys and treats will also help them cooperate as you handle their smelly situation.
Tomato Juice Bath
First, make sure you use 100% pure tomato juice – not V8 or any other alternative. You will need about 2 gallons of pure tomato juice for every 50 lbs (23kg) of body weight. If you don’t have enough on hand, try mixing in some water or white vinegar instead, which will still work well.
Once all the ingredients are ready, fill your bathtub with lukewarm water and add several cups of tomato juice. Be careful not to use too much pressure when applying; let the mixture soak on your dog’s fur for at least 5 minutes so that it has time to break down and absorb into their coat effectively. Afterward, rinse thoroughly with warm water until the sudsy feeling from the mix is gone. Repeat this process if necessary until you see satisfactory results!
While this method does tend to help reduce skunk odors considerably over time (up to two washes), keep in mind that it’s best used as an emergency measure rather than replacing bathing with regular shampooing and/or conditioning treatments.
Regular shampooing and conditioning treatments provide better protection against skin diseases caused by bacteria build-up from living outdoors or being around wild animals like raccoons and skunks commonly found in rural areas.
Vinegar and Water
A mixture of white vinegar and water at a one-to-one ratio can help neutralize the skunk’s odor without having to deal with harsh chemical perfumes or potentially drying out the pet’s fur. This easy-to-make and cost-effective method only takes two ingredients you probably already have in your home.
First, mix one quart of white vinegar and one quart of lukewarm water and use it as a rinse for fur, skin, and eye area. Be sure to do this outdoors and put on gloves so the smell stays out of the house.

When ready, rinse off the paste with lukewarm water for sudsy results! Make sure to remove any bits of the mixture left on your dog’s fur after rinsing. Adding a few drops of shampoo formulated for animals gives extra oomph in eliminating the smell and pH balance in your dog’s fur.

This mixture should be applied liberally across your pet’s entire coat, making sure to massage it down into the fur as much as possible. After applying the mixture, let it sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. During this time, baking soda and dish soap enzymes will break down skunk oils and neutralize odors quickly and effectively.
Once the mixture is finished working its magic on your pup’s fur, you can rinse them off using lukewarm water from either a sink or garden hose outside (depending on the size of your dog). Make sure that you completely remove all traces of baking soda from their coat, as anything left behind could cause skin irritation that could last up to several weeks if not resolved right away.
Finally, after rinsing your dog off entirely, use regular shampoo designed specifically for animals to restore their natural pH levels while moisturizing their fur with additional oils they may have lost due to chemical exposure during treatment with baking soda/dish soap combo earlier on. Once out of the bathtub/shower stall/garden hose & towel dried properly – voila – no more skunk smell! That’s how easy it is!
Lemon Juice
It is possible to use lemon juice to remove skunk smells from a dog. This method has been around for years and has proven effective in eliminating the pungent smell.

Allow this mixture to sit on them for 5 minutes at most before rinsing off with warm water using gentle movements while scrubbing lightly – no need for vigorous rubbing!
Afterward, add approximately 1/4 cup freshly-squeezed lemon juice into a sink full of warm water with at least equal parts of each component (you may also mix in some vinegar if desired). Dab the affected areas carefully; make sure not to saturate the fabric if dealing with a pet bed or furniture where they have laid down recently, as these materials absorb smells quite quickly!
Soak their fur thoroughly once finished dabbing until there is no more visible residue from earlier cleaning efforts – usually, about 10-15 minutes should suffice, depending upon severity levels.
Rinse off your pup one last time using cool water (do not use hot as high temperatures will set odors permanently rather than eliminate them!). Let him air dry or towel dry before allowing Fido outside again – we don’t want any other critters getting attracted by his lingering fragrance either way!
