October is Pet Wellness Month! Here is a refresher list of some tips that will help to keep your pet in tip-top shape.
Tip 1: Routine Vet Checks
When it comes to your furry friends, routine check-ups with a veterinarian are recommended at least once per year for adult animals. If you have a puppy, more frequent visits may be required for vaccinations. Routine visits can help to confirm their health or identify any potential issues. If you are not currently connected with a local veterinarian, Wilco has partnered with Oregon Mobile Veterinary Services and Good Neighbor Vet, offering convenient and affordable quality care for your pets. Services include exams, microchipping, vaccines and more. You can find the full list of upcoming mobile vet clinics at your local Wilco Store here.
Tip 2: Feeding an Appropriate Pet Food
Providing proper nutrition for your pet plays a big part in their overall health. Aside from basic needs like water, a nutritional diet should also be fed specific to the needs of your pet. When picking out a pet food, thinking about these questions can help narrow down your choices and ensure you’re picking the best one for your pet:
• What is your pet’s age?
• What is the breed or size of your pet? Do you have a large breed dog or a smaller breed?
• Are there any specific concerns or health issues with your pet?
• Are you interested in a dry, wet, raw, froze, dehydrated diet or combination?
• Compare the food labels- Do they have high-quality ingredients with limited fillers?
Find your pet’s food at your local Wilco Store or online at farmstore.com.
Tip 3: Exercise Your Pet Regularly, Even on The Rainy Days
Exercising your pet in the Pacific Northwest during the fall and winter can be tough because of the rain. But it’s so important to help control weight gain and burn off unused energy. Give some of these options a try on the next rainy day!
• Run up and down stairs
• Set up an obstacle course
• Play fetch
• Treadmill walk
• Hide treats and let your pet sniff for them
• Visit Wilco and walk your dog through the aisles while he picks out a new toy!
Tip 4: Pet Identification Tags
A staggering 1 in 3 pets become lost in their lifetime. According to the National Council on Pet Population only 2% of cats and 20% of dogs are reunited with their families after being lost. You can help keep your pet safe and give them the best chance for a safe return if they go missing with these simple steps:
• Check your pet’s collar regularly for wear and tear and replace when it becomes frayed or unusable
• Add a pet identification tag with the help of Wilco’s Pet ID Tag Service to your pet’s collar and include name and contact number
•. Visit a Mobile Vet Clinic at Wilco to have your pet microchipped
Tip 5: Keep Their Teeth Clean
Like exercising your pet and providing proper nutrition, your pet’s dental health contributes to their overall health. Poor pet dental care can lead to or cause other serious health issues. If your pet visits their veterinarian for a yearly check-up, their gums and teeth will be checked then. Keeping your pet’s teeth clean can be as easy as offering dog dental treats or dog chews, using dog tooth wipes to remove plaque or using a pet-specific toothpaste with a piece of gauze to brush their teeth. If at any time you notice your pet has red, swollen or bleeding gums, increased drooling, plaque or tartar build-up, begins to lose weight or has bad breath that’s stronger than normal, you should him in to see a veterinarian.
