Your August Garden Checklist with Mike Darcy

July 31, 2023

Small girl with grandmother smelling roses

During the month of August, we should have some time to relax and enjoy our garden. Whether it is an ornamental mix of annual and perennial flowers, a vegetable garden, or perhaps some of both, there is much to enjoy. While there are always chores to be done, August gives us some time to reflect on some of our planting from the spring and to begin thinking about what we like and don’t like and what changes will be made next year. A garden is really never ‘complete’ and is always changing. The changes may not always be to our liking, but nevertheless, there will be changes.

Bearded Iris springtime bloom

Bearded Iris

If you have bearded iris that have been in the same flower bed for more than three years, it might be a good idea to divide them, and this is the time. Often clumps of iris will get quite thick and spring bloom may be reduced. Dividing them now, will allow plants plenty of time for them to get established before winter.

Salmon colored Dahlia flowers growing in the garden

Dahlias

Dahlias should be blooming and if flowers appear to have some of the petals eaten, this is probably from earwigs. Cut a flower that has been damaged and inspect the center and you will likely find an earwig. Earwigs can be devasting to dahlia flowers. Many slug and snail baits will also control earwigs, check the label to be certain. For a natural barrier, Tree Tanglefoot can be applied around the base of the stems and it will make a physical barrier that earwigs cannot get through. Tree Tanglefoot works best on tall dahlias where there are several main stems and no leaves that are in contact with the soil.

Healthy green lawn

New Lawn

Now through mid-September is an ideal time to plant a new lawn. There is no one grass fits all when planting a lawn. Different regions have different grasses that perform best. Check with your local Wilco Garden Center on the best grass seed for your area.

Hands in gloves of gardener planting red roses in garden

Roses

If roses are looking malnourished, give them one last application of a rose fertilizer. Cultivate the fertilizer into the top several inches of soil and water. Keep roses picked and they should continue blooming into the fall.

Calibrachoa bushes in a hanging baskets

Summer Annuals

Summer blooming annuals, especially those in containers, will probably need an application of a water-soluble fertilizer. This will encourage new growth and bloom. If the weather stays warm and with sufficient water and fertilizer, many summer annuals will continue blooming well into the fall.

Tomatoes

If you are a fan of growing many different varieties of tomatoes, make notes of which are the favorites and when each variety begins to ripen. Without some kind of record, it is easy to forget. I always have intentions of doing this, but usually don’t, and then the following spring wish that I had!

Small sprouts of basil

Basil

Basil is a popular summer herb and I often see it in pots on decks and patios which makes it easy to cut fresh leaves if the plants are close to the kitchen. Keep the flowers snipped off so the plant sends energy to the foliage and not the flowers. However, leaving some flowers will be an attractant to honeybees. Basil flowers seem to be a magnet for them.

Enjoy the beauty that the August garden has to offer. Sitting outside and watching the hummingbirds visit flowers and defend their territory is a delight to see. Make sure that there is a source of water for not only the hummingbirds, but other birds as well. A final note, rinse out birdbaths daily to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

Enjoy August!
